Inadequate

You ever feel this way – inadequate?
Like all the words that come through clacking keys
Out of your brain are not enough to speak,
Don’t quite deserve whatever praise they get.

You’re not experienced enough – not yet –
To speak of high and hard and ancient things,
And some are better than you’ll ever be,
And wherefore then this confidence?

Well, I don’t know, maybe it’s true; but still,
My God delights to use the weak, His plan
Fulfilled by those who were inadequate.
And if He’s called me to weave words, He will
Give grace that’s greater than the thoughts of man.
I know my God will make me adequate.

Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God, who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. (2 Corinthians 3:5-6)

  1. A lot of young writers — well, probably young people in general — struggle with this, I think.

My favourite line is “To speak of high and hard and ancient things”. It sounds like Tolkien, in a good way, not copy-catting.

  2. This is beautiful, Katherine! Sonnets can be so hard! But the rhyme and meter flow easily and naturally. The message is simple, but powerful. Nothing about it is forced. Both skillful and strong — what poetry should be. ❤

  3. Katherine- You are so, so encouraging, and thank you so, so much for being such a friend, even if you and I don’t directly know each other. ❤
